01 / BOOTS ON THE GROUND

Your way into the yard.

Once the world is shared with you, you can host it even when its creator is away.

FIRST TIME

Set up the crew.

  1. Sign in to Microsoft. Everyone needs a Microsoft/Xbox account for Shared Worlds, including Steam players. Enable Crossplay in the game options.
  2. Add your friends. Use each other’s Xbox gamertags so the world owner can find the crew.
  3. Create the Shared World. One person starts the new multiplayer world and chooses Shared World. A standard save can also be converted through the save menu.
  4. Share access. The owner selects the world, uses Share with Friends, and grants access to each player.

The world still needs to be created in Grounded. This page doesn’t create or grant access to it.

IF SOMEONE IS PLAYING

Join the adventure.

Open Multiplayer → Join Online Game. Find your friend’s session and join. Everyone should use the same Crossplay setting.

Open Grounded
IF YOU’RE FIRST ONLINE

Take the host seat.

Choose Multiplayer → Host Online Game → Continue, then select the shared world. Only one person hosts at a time.

When you finish, save and quit normally. Wait for the cloud save to finish before another player hosts.

02 / KEEP THE CREW TOGETHER

A little help
from the bot.

Find the joining guide and let your friends know who’s taking the host seat, right from Discord.

03 / BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT

Good to know.

Does anyone need to leave their PC on?

Only while they’re hosting a session. When nobody is playing, everyone can close the game. The shared save remains in the cloud for the next host.

Can we play without the world’s creator?

Yes, once the owner grants you Shared World access. Select that world when hosting a multiplayer game. The owner doesn’t need to be online.

What if the world doesn’t appear?

Check your Microsoft sign-in, Xbox friendship, matching Crossplay settings, and the owner’s Share with Friends list. Shared World access and a regular game invitation are separate things.

How do we protect our progress?

Save and quit normally before changing hosts. You can also make a Standard Copy from the shared world’s save menu for a separate local backup. That copy won’t keep syncing with the shared world.

Can the bot start or stop the game?

No. Hosting, joining, and saving happen inside Grounded. The bot keeps a temporary record of who says they’re hosting; it cannot verify player counts, saves, or whether the game is running.
